Steer
Shape the options so a free choice lands where you intend; the moment the steering shows, it has failed.
Formerly Force
The magician's force: pick any card, the trick still works.
Seen in Walt Disney Imagineering, Cinderella Castle at the end of Main Street, Magic Kingdom, 1971
Try it on your work
Fit two things that don't fit, physically, insistently, until either a join is invented or a part yields. Both outcomes are information about which was softer.
Put two statements your project holds that cannot both be fully true into one sentence containing both. The word you needed to make it work is the compromise you've been living.
Impose one requirement onto a part of the system that was never built for it, and support nothing. Where it breaks is the system's real boundary, which the diagram didn't show.
How it has been used
Direct people through apparent freedom: the garden path that offers one route as the obvious one, the menu that makes one dish inevitable, the default setting. The move forbids visible compulsion: the moment the directing shows, the operation has failed and become an order.
