Shade Across

Lay the categories along one range; place everything by position, between labels as often as on them.

Bold is a point on a slider, not a separate font.

Seen in Robert Slimbach and Carol Twombly, Myriad, Adobe, 1992

Try it on your work

With your hands

Mix two paints in ten even steps from one to the other and lay the swatches in a row. Stop at ten; name none of them.

In words

Take three words you use to sort your work (rough, draft, final, say). Write them along one line, then place ten pieces of work along it, between the words as often as on them. Stop at ten.

In the process

Instead of a yes-or-no vote, a group stands along a line across the floor, one end meaning yes and the other no. Stop when everyone has placed themselves.

How it has been used

Replace a set of categories with one continuous range and let position give degree: the weights of a typeface as a slider, the colour names as points on a spectrum, small, medium and large as marks on one line. The move forbids rounding to the nearest label: anything may sit between them.
