Reserve

Keep some capacity unused and in order; give it no purpose in advance.

Half a house built; the other half left to whoever lives there.

Try it on your work

With your hands

Build a box with one compartment more than you need, finished like the others. Stop when it is built; put nothing in the extra compartment.

In words

When you write a plan, add one heading with nothing under it, and keep it through every revision. Stop when the plan is final; the heading stays empty.

In the process

A group setting out its year leaves one day each month unscheduled and unnamed, free for whoever wants it. Stop when the calendar is set.

How it has been used

Keep some capacity unused and in working order, and give it no purpose in advance: the empty bay in a frame, the unassigned line in a budget, the blank pages bound in at the back. Whoever comes later decides, or nobody does. The move forbids planning the reserve: the moment it has a use, it is no longer held back.
