Relax

Keep the ban; set a price for each break; pay it every time; never change it.

An unplayable lie: one stroke, every time.

Try it on your work

With your hands

Work with a palette of three colours. A fourth may be used, but each use costs painting out an area of the same size elsewhere in white. Stop after an hour.

In words

Write 200 words with no adjectives. Each adjective you use costs deleting a sentence you have already written. Stop at 200 words.

In the process

A group agrees one ban for a meeting: no talk of money, say. Anyone may break it, but each break costs the speaker a minute of silence straight after. Stop at the end of the meeting.

How it has been used

Keep the rule, and put a price on breaking it, fixed in advance and paid every time: the banned colour that costs a patch of the canvas painted out, the word limit that may be broken for a cut made elsewhere, the element off the grid paid for by removing another. The move forbids bargaining: the price never changes and the rule never lifts.
