Try it on your work

With your hands

Lend one tool, material or corner of your workspace to someone else, with an end date written on it now. On that date it comes back unless you both renew. Stop at the date.

In words

Hand one decision in your project to another person for a fixed period and write the end date where you can both see it. Say nothing when it arrives. Stop at the date; if neither of you renews, the decision comes back to you.

In the process

A group gives one member a role, such as chair or editor, until a day fixed before the role starts. The role ends that day unless the group renews it beforehand. Stop at the day.

How it has been used

Give the authority with its end date attached: the guest editor for one issue, the intern who owns the brief until Friday, the rule that runs for a term and dies unless someone re-votes it. The move forbids quiet continuation: if nobody renews, it ends, and an authority that carries on because nobody noticed the date was never leased.
